New Product Release: 50 kW bidirectional isolated DC/DC converter

PUBLISHED
As megawatt charging accelerates the electrification of heavy-duty transport, infrastructure must deliver not only higher power levels but also safety and reliability.
At the core of power conversion safety lies galvanic isolation. Ensuring reinforced isolation at extreme power levels is one of the most critical engineering challenges in the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) infrastructure. Protection of users, vehicles, and equipment must not be compromised, particularly as charging capacities scale into the megawatt range. Yet achieving reinforced galvanic isolation at megawatt scale has traditionally required large mains-frequency transformers, adding significant weight, size, cost, and complexity.
The BI25 power module introduces a new approach.
The bidirectional isolated DC/DC converter eliminates the need for large mains frequency transformers by providing a compact, isolated, high-efficiency solution for power conversion. It provides galvanic isolation across a wide range of high-power applications, including:
- Megawatt-scale DC fast charging
- Battery-assisted EV charging
- High-power Vehicle-to-Grid EV chargers
- Microgrid energy storage systems
- Marine ports
- Uninterruptible power supply systems for data centres
- Tactical power systems for defence applications
- Solid-state transformers
With each building block getting bigger, civil engineering gets intensive, the weight of the overall system becomes heavy, and the distance between the parking spots for vehicles and the power converter increases, becoming a typical issue for charging stations. One sustainable way to address the topic of breaking down the large monolith into smaller, more practical, segments is to use DC voltage as an interconnecting link.
ADVANTICS has developed a power converter solution that achieves just that: a two stage conversion system based on the latest SiC transistors, providing reinforced isolation using high frequency technology, and step down buck conversion stage for voltage and current control.
As megawatt DC infrastructures evolve, regulatory frameworks such as IEC 61851-23-3 and corresponding UL standards define reinforced isolation requirements between the mains and charging interfaces, as well as between individual charge outputs. In response to these requirements, a robust system architecture typically integrates two essential functions within each charging unit: isolation of the intermediate DC link, for example around 850 VDC, and controlled output regulation across a wide voltage range from 200 V to 1250 V, extending up to 1500 V for rugged MCS applications. In combination with ADVANTICS 100kW 1500V DC/DC Isolated Power Converter , the BI25 units can be arranged in parallel to achieve safe power delivery at the megawatt scale.
The DC/DC converter ADM-PC-BI25 has been developed to support precisely these architectural needs, enabling safe, modular, and scalable megawatt DC systems.
